Xrefer: Free Trial of Reference Book Database

New Resources — Posted by Kay Benjamin @ 10:12

Xrefer is a digital collection of over 100 reference sources including encyclopedias, dictionaries, directories, factbooks, and guides on pretty much any topic imaginable. A unique "concept map" provides a visual map of the results of any search. Overall, a useful all-purpose dictionary and encylopedic starting place.

We have a free trial of Xrefer through November 30. Give it a try and send your comments and recommendations regarding whether we should purchase or not to Nancy Cannon at cannonns@oneonta.edu.

ANGEL problems

General — Posted by Kay Benjamin @ 14:07

Students trying to access documents on Angel (the new course management software) are having trouble opening documents when using Internet Explorer. To access documents on Angel they should use the Mozilla Firefox browser.

I have reported the problem to Deb who is letting Justin know.

General — Posted by Kay Benjamin @ 13:41

The library is planning to redesign its website to better reflect the way the college community uses it. We want everyone to have the opportunity to give us feedback on what you like and what you don't like, along with your ideas about what we could add.

Please take five or ten minutes to fill out the Milne Library Website Redesign Survey. It could pay off in a library website that caters to your needs. Thank you!

Academic Search Premier Database of Periodicals

New Resources — Posted by Kay Benjamin @ 14:12

The library has upgraded from Academic Search Elite to Academic Search Premier. Touted as "the world's largest academic multi-disciplinary database," Premier is more than twice the size of Elite, providing access to 4,600+ periodicals, including the full text of over 3,600 peer-reviewed journals. New features include the ability to select "Academic Journals" or "Magazines" or "Newspapers" from the list of results. For a more in-depth description of Academic Search Premier go to the Ebsco web page.

This, and other new databases, are part of the SUNYConnect package which comes through SUNY consortial negotiating.

The library no longer has InfoTrac Expanded Academic, but Academic Search Premier is a much larger database, more than filling the gap left by InfoTrac.
