This presentation will describe an artistic work created in response to a series of violent exchanges between Israel and Gaza that occurred in late 2012. Ruminations on those attacks generated a large-scale performance piece titled “War Again,” which was premiered at Musrara Mix 13, an annual festival of new music, new media, and experimental arts held in Jerusalem, Israel. The work, produced by Joseph Pignato, along with Israeli artists Kiki Keren-Huss and Lior Pinsky, used technology to link over a dozen participants working in remote locations including the US, Israel, Croatia, Ireland, and Germany. The presentation will describe the genesis of the work, examine the participants as a “community of response,” and consider the implications of distance collaboration as a means for facilitating virtual communities and as a medium for social, political, and cultural engagement.
