Roger Hecht (English) published a book chapter, “‘Mighty Lordships in the Heart of the Republic:’ the Anti-Rent Subtext to Pierre,” in A Political Companion to Herman Melville (University Press of Kentucky). The chapter examines the way Melville uses references to the Anti-Rent conflict as a platform to attack the emergence of aristocracy in antebellum America.
