Izabella Lokshina, Management, Marketing and Information Systems, presented a research paper titled ³Algorithms for Accelerated Rare Event Simulation with Markov Chain Modelling in Communications Networks² at the 11th Annual Industrial Simulation Conference (ISC’2013) that was held at Ghent University, Belgium on May 23, 2013. The event was organized by the European Technology Institute (ETI), sponsored by the European Simulation Society (EUROSIS) together with ADICTEL, AEKI, CREAX, ENSAIT, Delft Institute of Technology, Ghent University, University of Lyon, and IPK Fraunhofer. The aim of the conference was to give a complete overview of this year’s industrial simulation research within the industrial simulation community. The conference focused on simulation applications for the industrial enterprises of the future (e.g. transformable factories, networked factories, learning factories, digital factories) depending on different drivers such as high performance, high customisation, environmental friendliness and sustainability, high efficiency of resources, human potential and knowledge creation.

In this paper, co-authored by Evan Schiele, Program Delivery Manager with SAP America, Dr. Lokshina proposed an effective approach to a buffer overflow simulation, which is one of the vital issues in networking and telecommunications. Efficient models and algorithms were developed and applied to accelerate the overflow probability simulation (e.g., rare event in communication networks); and the simulation results were shown and analyzed. The recommended approach proved to be appropriate and particularly efficient being used for reliability and performance evaluation in communication networks, while more reliable networks must be described by rarer events.

The presentation attracted a lot of attention within the industrial simulation community, and the paper was published in the EUROSIS-ETI ISC’2013 refereed proceedings. Additionally, Dr. Lokshina was chairing one of the technical sessions on May 23.

Joshua J. Frye, Communication Arts, recently presented a paper during the 12th Biennial Conference on Communication and the Environment (COCE), held at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala, Sweden. The paper was entitled “The Rhetorical Construction of Food Waste in US Public Discourse” and applied frame theory to analyze the array of perceptions in popular culture texts regarding the problem of food wastage. Frye was invited to present this work at the first international academic conference of the newly formed International Environmental Communication Association (IECA). The IECA grew out of the US based Environmental Communication Network in 2012. The scientific organizing committee for the conference rejected 35% of the proposals submitted but invited 200 participants from 30 countries to present papers at the conference. Another 50 submitters were accepted to present their work during one of two poster sessions. Roughly half of the panels—including the one Frye presented on—were selected to be live streamed to the internet, where hundreds of people worldwide tuned in.

The National Science Foundation’s Transforming Undergraduate Education in STEM Program awarded a $194,129 grant to the Research Foundation of SUNY on behalf of SUNY Oneonta in support of “Revolution In Physiology Education: RIPE for Change.” Under the direction of Associate Professor of Biology Dr. Keith Schillo, the project was one of about 125 selected from 1,050 proposals to receive funding.

The goal of the project is to change the way physiology is taught—not just at SUNY Oneonta, but also at other institutions with which the results of the project will be shared. The NSF grant will be used to purchase state-of-the-art instrumentation for human and animal physiology experiments that will be used to create instructional resources for a problem-based approach to teaching physiology. A new conceptual framework for teaching physiology, supported by a set of specific instructional tools, will be developed and shared with other colleges and universities.

The “RIPE for Change” project is part of ongoing effort to develop a state-of-the-art anatomy and physiology learning environment at SUNY Oneonta. Earlier this year, Schillo applied for and received a college Strategic Allocation of Resources (StAR) grant to purchase a virtual anatomy table.

“The new equipment, together with existing resources, will result in an anatomy and physiology laboratory that is comparable to those of graduate and professional schools,” said Schillo. “This has not gone unnoticed. Graduates of our program have been having great success in gaining admittance into prestigious programs in the health sciences.”

For example, this year, three SUNY Oneonta students were accepted into the Physician Assistant program at Albany Medical College, three students were accepted to the Physical Therapy program at Upstate Medical University, and one student was accepted to Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine. Others have gone on to advanced degree programs at New York University, Drexel University, LeMoyne College and other well-known schools.
