The Apollo Music Club at SUNY Oneonta will present “Little Women,” a contemporary opera by Mark Adamo, on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, Feb. 8-10. Performances will begin at 8 p.m. at the Goodrich Theater in SUNY Oneonta’s Fine Arts Building. Listen to an excerpt from the opera here.

The show is free for SUNY Oneonta students and $10 for the general public. Tickets can be purchased at the Goodrich Theater box office one hour before each performance. Early purchases can be made starting Feb. 1 at the Hunt College Union, weekdays between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m., or online here.

Based on the classic novel by Louisa May Alcott, the opera will feature a cast of 19, including Dr. Stephen Markuson of SUNY Oneonta’s Music Department and Johanna Arnold, adjunct music lecturer at Hartwick College, in the roles of Mr. and Mrs. March. Four SUNY Oneonta students will portray the March sisters, with Megan Harrington as Jo, Chelsea Riegal as Meg, Alexandra Schleuderer as Amy and Sarah Buell as Beth. Charles Schneider, conductor of the Catskill Symphony Orchestra, is the musical director and conductor for the production.

The Apollo Music Club stages an opera every year, but “Little Women” is one of its biggest undertakings, said voice teacher and production director Colby Thomas of the college’s Music Department. “This is the eighth opera I’ve directed and it is, by far, the most complex score that we’ve ever tackled. Fortunately, I have enough talented students to take on the principal roles — and they are just extraordinary.”
