College to Offer New M.A. in Mathematics
SUNY Oneonta has received final approval to begin offering a Master of Arts degree in mathematics in the fall semester of 2012.
Offered by the college’s Department of Mathematics, Computer Science & Statistics, the program is designed primarily for individuals who seek a terminal graduate degree in mathematics. However, students may, in consultation with their adviser, design a program that will prepare them for a Ph.D. in mathematics. In addition, this program meets New York State guidelines for permanent teaching certification in secondary mathematics education.
Only 11 of SUNY’s 64 campuses and just three in the region — SUNY Albany, SUNY Binghamton and SUNY Oneonta — offer a master’s degree in mathematics. The program at SUNY Oneonta will include 30 credits of graduate-level mathematics, computer science, statistics and/or mathematics education. Students will be required to take sequences in algebra and analysis, a graduate seminar course and an independent study course in mathematics or mathematics education. The program will culminate with either a project or a comprehensive examination.
More information about the new program is available here or from the SUNY Oneonta Office of Graduate Studies at (607) 436-2523.
