College to Host Annual Kidney Walk Event
All are welcome to participate in the walk, which will begin at 11 a.m. at the Alumni Field House on campus. There is a minimum donation of $5 per walker.
The Halloween-themed event will include games, prizes, children’s activities and entertainment. SUNY Oneonta’s Phi Sigma Sigma sorority and Center for Social Responsibility and Community is one of several sponsors of the event, which aims to raise awareness of kidney disease, its causes and prevention, and the need for organ donation.
According to the Northeast Kidney Foundation:
• 26 million people nationwide have kidney disease, and most of them don’t know it.
• Anyone with diabetes or high blood pressure is at risk.
• Every five minutes, someone’s kidneys fail.
• 95,000 people in the United States are waiting for a kidney transplant.
The Northeast Kidney Foundation is a grassroots, community-focused health organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of those affected by kidney disease and related conditions through early identification, intervention and prevention.
