Oneonta A Top College For Harry Potter Fans
Attention, aspiring wizards: About.com has conjured up a list of the “Top Colleges for Harry Potter Fans” and we’re on it!
SUNY Oneonta comes in at #8 on the list, which is featured in the College Admissions section of the website. The college’s Harry Potter Club was singled out because of its focus on volunteerism.
Established last year, the club incorporates community service – with a particular emphasis on promoting literacy – into many of its activities. Its first major event was a Triwizard Tournament last spring that culminated in a Yule Ball benefit for Oneonta Reading is Fundamental, a nonprofit organization that provides free books to elementary school children. Club President Sarah Vitro says plans are in the works for a “bigger and better” Yule Ball benefit event on March 8, 2013, at the Hunt College Union.
Also in the planning stages are a spring book drive for A.O. Fox Hospital and a reading session in a local elementary school.
Interest in the club is growing, with 60 new members “sorted” into houses this fall. The club held a variety of Harry Potter-themed events and activities during the fall semester, including a Death Day Party the week before Halloween and weekly Quidditch practices.
During Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the club sold long-sleeve pink shirts that said “Mighty Like McGonagall” to honor breast cancer survivor Maggie Smith (the actress who played Professor McGonagall in the Harry Potter films) as a fundraiser for the Susan G. Komen Foundation.
Members also teamed up with the Rock to Cure club on a benefit concert for the Susan G. Komen Foundation in early November. The Harry Potter Club offered tables with Halloween-themed activities, including decorating a cauldron cake, guessing jelly bean flavors, and throwing a Quaffle through a Quidditch hoop.
