‘As You Like It’ Opens Tuesday at Hamblin
The SUNY Oneonta Department of Theatre and the Mask and Hammer Theatre Club will present William Shakespeare’s comedy “As You Like It,” from March 5-10. Performances will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday, March 5-9, and at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 10, in the Hamblin Theater of the Fine Arts Building on campus.
Directed by Dr. Andrew Kahl, associate professor of theatre, the play stars Mark Durkee (Orlando), Lizzy Heck (Adam), Jared Barton (Oliver), Kevin Sutton (Dennis), Jean Perez (Charles/William), Samantha Nugent (Rosalind), Megan Harrington (Celia), Josh Santiago (Touchstone), Colin-Pierre Larnerd (Le Beau/Corin), Taylor Hogan (Duke Frederick), Chris Mackin (Duke Senior), Lisa Warner (Amiens), Tony Ruperto (Jaques), Billy Alsheimer (Silvius), Charlene Beckwith (Audrey), Brian Whittaker (Sir Oliver Martext), Kat Ricigliano (Phoebe) and Kayleigh Melite, Ric Wendlandt and Evan Morier (Lords).
Much of the play takes place in the Forest of Arden, where Duke Senior, banished by his brother, lives in exile with his noblemen. As the action unfolds, Duke Senior’s daughter, Rosalind, and several other characters flee to Arden, where a series of plot twists and romantic mix-ups ensue in this tale of disguise and deception, friendship and romance, family strife and reconciliation.
For this production, the cast re-envisioned Shakespeare’s Forest of Arden as an 1870s American wilderness, somewhere west of the Appalachians. The performance is enriched by the use of environmental sound, provided by Assistant Professor of Music Julie Licata and percussion students Alex Sader, Austin Gould and Eugene Gardner.
Tickets ($5 general admission or free with a student ID) can be picked up at the Hunt College Union information desk weekdays between 10 a.m. and 10 p.m. or at the Fine Arts box office an hour before curtain on performance days.
