Poetry Slam Team Finishes 10th at CUPSI

The SUNY Oneonta Poetry Slam Team finished in 10th place out of 59 teams from across the country after making it to the semi-final round of a national collegiate poetry slam tournament. Oneonta slammers faced off against teams from Stanford University, Wesleyan University, University of California-Berkeley and Virginia Commonwealth University during a semi-final bout in the 2013 College Unions Poetry Slam Invitational (CUPSI) at Barnard College on Friday, April 5.

The 2013 team includes poets Justine Bishop, Matt Coonan, Chelsea Defino, Anny Miner and Mary Anne Rojas; assistant coach Megan Gillen and coach Mary Taibi, a 2012 graduate of SUNY Oneonta.

Hosted by the Association of College Unions International, CUPSI is the only licensed poetry slam tournament bringing college students together to showcase their talents in the competitive art of performance poetry. During the four-day tournament, teams of poets representing 59 colleges and universities from across the United States competed for top honors in collegiate performance poetry. Additionally, more than 400 attendees had the opportunity to participate in workshops, performances and more. This year’s event marked the highest attendance in history.

Founded in 1914, ACUI is a nonprofit educational organization that brings together college union and student activities professionals from hundreds of schools in seven countries.
