Alumni to Be Honored At Reunion Weekend

Hundreds of alumni, their families and friends of SUNY Oneonta will return to campus for Reunion Weekend 2013 from Friday, June 7, through Sunday, June 9. In addition to gatherings, events and athletic competitions, the college’s Alumni Association will present its annual awards in recognition of outstanding contributions to the college.

Several events showcasing the Oneonta area will be part of this year’s festivities. Alumni will be encouraged to participate in Main Street Oneonta’s Fabulous First Fridays programming, the Oneonta Farmers’ Market and the Oneonta Outlaws home opener at Damaschke Field on Saturday, and the Habitat for Humanity 5K Brewery to Brewery Fun Run/Walk at Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown on Sunday.

Other weekend highlights include golf and tennis tournaments, shows in the college’s digital planetarium, a tour of the college’s Biological Field Station on Otsego Lake, a barbecue catered by Brooks and featuring WONY DJ Jonathan “Woody” Kaplan of the Class of 1999, and an alumni art exhibit coordinated by Tim Sheesley of the Class of 1977.

Receptions and events to honor alumni of specific years or decades, donors and special-interest groups — including alumni who were involved in Pi Delta Chi, home economics majors and retired faculty, Clionian, Alpha Sigma Alpha and Alpha Sigma Beta
—will be held throughout the weekend.

A reception to honor the 50th Reunion Class of 1963 and recognize the winners of the annual Alumni Awards will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in the Hunt Union Ballroom. Seven awards will be presented:

Don Berchoff ’84, vice president for Advanced Weather Programs and Operations and the director of Armed Forces Practice at Unisys, will receive the Educational Opportunity Program Alumni Network Outstanding Achievement Award for Excellence in Public Service.

Barbara Ganim ’69, former owner, CEO and Creative Director of Ganim Advertising Association Inc., will receive the Distinguished Alumna Award.

Ishmael Kamara ’08, a history teacher at Bronx International High School, will receive the Educational Opportunity Program Alumni Outstanding Achievement Award.

Kimberly Laiso ’09, life coach at Spire School in Stamford, Conn., will receive the Outstanding Young Alumna Award.

Joan Pondolfino ’61, 2013 reunion chair and editor of the Alpha Sigma Alpha, Alpha Sigma Beta and Clionian sorority directory, will receive the Excellence in Alumni Service Award.

Joe Poon ’78, master chef, will receive the Outstanding Commitment to Diversity and Inclusion Award.

John G. Stoffolano Jr. ’62, professor of entomology at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, will receive the Distinguished Alumnus Award.
