Charles Ragozzine Jr. Elected to MAA Post
Charles B. Ragozzine Jr., associate professor in SUNY Oneonta’s Mathematics, Computer Science, and Statistics Department, is serving as chair of the Seaway Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA). The Seaway Section is named for the St. Lawrence Seaway and comprises the greater part of upstate New York and the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Quebec.
This elected office is part of a six-year commitment to the MAA, which includes two years as first vice chair and program chair, one year as chair-elect, two years as chair and one year as past-chair. As the first vice chair and program chair, Ragozzine’s duties included organizing the program for the biannual MAA Seaway conferences, finding speakers for the morning plenary sessions at sectional meetings, liaising with local arrangers and chairs of various sessions, and helping to run the program on the day of the conference.
As chair, his duties include helping secure venues for future conferences, finding members to serve on the various section committees, running the Executive, Extended Executive and Business committee meetings at the conferences, and helping to organize and implement the programs at Seaway Section events. The next MAA Seaway conference will be held Oct. 18-19 at SUNY Potsdam. Ragozzine also represented the Seaway Section at MAA MathFest in Hartford, Conn., from July 31-Aug, 3.
Ragozzine joined the SUNY Oneonta faculty in fall 2000. He regularly teaches courses in Calculus, Discrete Math, Number Theory, Modern Algebra and Linear Algebra. His research interests relate to Hopf Algebras and Quantum Groups.
