Homecoming and Family Weekend

September 17th, 2013 | Categories: Uncategorized

Hundreds of alumni, parents and community members will visit SUNY Oneonta from Sept. 20-22 for Homecoming & Family Weekend. Scheduled events range from fireworks to a 2.6-mile run/walk.

Admission to many of the weekend’s events is free, and members of the community are invited to participate. The full schedule is available here.

For the first time this year, the weekend will begin with a bang. A fireworks show is planned for Friday night near the Hunt College Union. Highlights of Saturday’s events include the annual craft fair from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Hunt Union ballroom and a concert by Yesterday, a Beatles tribute band, at 8 p.m., also in the ballroom. Tickets (free with SUNY ID and $5 for others) can be purchased at the Hunt Union or online at oneontatickets.com.

The annual Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Fieldhouse. This year’s Honorary Inductee is Franklin, N.Y., resident David Bailey, who was the first athletic trainer hired for the SUNY Oneonta athletics department. In addition to serving as athletic trainer from 1963-1977, he filled various other roles—including coaching golf and overseeing the intramurals program. In 1977, he assumed the role of men’s athletic director, a job he held until his departure in 1979 for the United States Sports Academy. Joining Bailey in the 15th Hall of Fame Class are six former student athletes: basketball players Tom Nuttall ’65 and Ralph Christian ’77; tennis players Alan E. Chaskin ’70 and Susan Ritter Monfort ’91; baseball player Richard Yandoli ’77; and multisport athlete Rosemary “Ro” Sorensen Harvey ’73.

For the second year in a row, the weekend will include a self-guided Cooperstown Beverage Trail tour with stops at the Fly Creek Cider Mill, Bear Pond Winery, Cooperstown Brewing Company and Brewery Ommegang.

“Prairie Series,” an exhibition by art professor emeritus Dan Young, who taught at SUNY Oneonta from 1965-1995, will be on display on Friday and Saturday at the Martin-Mullen Gallery in the Fine Arts Building. The Project Space Gallery will feature “Art of the Adjunct,” a selection of recent works by SUNY Oneonta part-time art faculty.

The events of Homecoming & Family Weekend will conclude on Sunday morning with the 2.6-mile campus Fun Run/Walk sponsored by the SUNY Oneonta Inter-Greek Council. Event registration begins at 8:30 a.m., and the race is at 9:15 a.m.
