Short Story Writer to Give Reading Oct. 22

Dale Ray Phillips

The 2013-2014 Red Dragon Reading Series at SUNY Oneonta will continue Tuesday, Oct. 22, with a reading by fiction writer Dale Ray Phillips. The event, which is free and open to the public, begins at 7:30 p.m. in the Craven Lounge of the Morris Conference Center. The reading will be followed by a reception and book signing.

Phillips is the author of the book “My People’s Waltz,” which was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize in 2000. His short stories have appeared in Best American Short Stories, Best Stories from the South, The Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, GQ, Zoetrope, The Oxford American and literary quarterlies. He has taught at a variety of universities and is now an assistant professor at Murray State University, where he was the Watkins Chair in Creative Writing from 2007-2010.

Phillips earned bachelor’s degrees in anthropology and English at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill; a master’s in English at Hollins College; and an M.F.A. in creative writing at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville.
