Punk Rocker to Discuss Transgender Experience
Laura Jane Grace, founder, lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of the punk rock band Against Me!, will appear at SUNY Oneonta for a hybrid conversation and acoustic performance on Monday, Feb. 10.
Grace’s presentation will begin at 9 p.m. in the Hunt Union Ballroom. Admission is free for students, faculty and staff with valid SUNY Oneonta or Hartwick College ID. Others may attend by picking up their tickets for $3 at the Hunt Union Information Desk.
The band’s latest album, “Transgender Dysphoria Blues,” was inspired by Grace’s experience transitioning from Tom Gabel, as she was known until 2012, while still maintaining her musical identity. In May 2012, Grace made news when she came out as transgender in a “Rolling Stone” article in which she discussed her previously secret, lifelong struggle with gender dysphoria.
The new album, released Jan. 21, is the band’s sixth, and Grace’s first release since coming out as transgender. The album was reviewed last month in NPR’s “First Listen” series, and Against Me! performed on “Late Show with David Letterman” last week to promote the album.
Grace’s appearance at SUNY Oneonta will include a dialogue with Elliot Ruggles, director of the college’s Gender and Sexuality Resource Center, followed by an acoustic performance.
The program is sponsored by SUNY Oneonta’s Student Association Activities Council. More information is available from the club’s adviser, Bill Harcleroad, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
