Students raise $52,000 at Relay for Life
Students from SUNY Oneonta and Hartwick College teamed up to raise $51,649 for the American Cancer Society during a Relay for Life event March 7-8, and donations are still coming in as fundraising events continue.
More than 1,300 students camped out all night in SUNY Oneonta’s Alumni Field House, with team members taking turns walking laps around the gym from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. . The annual event was organized by the Colleges Against Cancer student groups at the two colleges with support from SUNY Oneonta’s Center for Social Responsibility and Community (CSRC).
In preparation for the event, students organized fundraisers, and some teams held fundraising activities, such as a Hoops for Hope basketball toss organized by SUNY Oneonta’s Educational Opportunity Program, during Relay for Life. Throughout the night, walkers were entertained with live music by student ensembles—including SUNY Music Madness winner Somewhere Up There and runner-up Hello, Seattle—and activities such as a Guitar Hero contest, Kan Jam tournament and three-legged relay race. Participants celebrated cancer survivors during a Survivor’s Lap and honored loved ones who lost the battle during a luminaria ceremony.
